Our family-run winery lies in the Kamp Valley, situated to the north of the Danube.

 

The specific character of a wine is based on the soil of the vineyard and the climate of the region. The Kamp Valley boasts three different types of soil and is blessed with an optimal climate for vineyards. This leads to wines of great finesse and diversity.

 

The Kamp Valley derives its name from the Kamp, a small river meandering its way through beautiful landscapes. With 4,000 ha of vineyards the Kamp Valley is one of the biggest wine producing areas of Austria.

 

Culture and tourism have always played a leading role in our region. Numerous wine taverns and specialised wine shops bring wine lovers and winemakers together. And they always end up talking about Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, or Zweigelt.

 

The hills of the Kamp Valley are made of primary rock. Brown earth soil rests on it and reaches depths of several metres in some parts, and only some 20 centimetres in others. Then there is loess; originally dust that had been carried by the wind to the Kamp Valley during the Ice Age, had compressed and eventually turned into a fertile soil. And finally clay soils which formed along the river banks of the Kamp.

 

The spice of the Kamp Valley is its unique micro climate: the hot and dry Pannonian climate meets the rough and cool winds of the Waldviertel region creating ideal conditions for winegrowing.

 

This positive effect is further enhanced by the geographical features of the region – a valley that opens up towards the warm valley of the Danube in the south, and closes off towards the cooler north. This brings about hot days and cool nights during the summer months followed by a long and sunny autumn. Thus, the grapes have plenty of time to fully ripen.

 

 

 

Making the grapes breathe…

 

Big variations in temperature between night and day preserve even the finest nuances in the grapes and allow them to breathe deeply. They breathe in the warmth of the sun during the day and the fresh air during the night while absorbing the spiciness of the soil. Wines from the Kamp Valley reflect these conditions so rich in contrast, and present a crystal clear and mineral character you will not find anywhere else and therefore recognise immediately.

 

The spiciness - which is so typical for the region – is at its best in a Grüner Veltliner. In the Kamp Valley it can unfold its enormous spectrum of variations: easygoing and light, classic and rich, full-bodied and sweet. Little wonder that we have chosen the Grüner Veltliner as our major grape variety, followed by Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc.
